Uzun süredir nasıl “Android uygulaması yapılır?” konulu bireysel öğrenimimi gerçekleştirmediğim için bir program yapmıyordum, üşeniyordum. Android’in platformu güzel, esnek; biraz kafa karıştırıcı ama hoş. En azından size Mac alma zorunluluğu koşmuyor.

Ben de gerekli tutorialları okuduktan sonra basit bir uygulama yazabildim. Bunu da şu an en azından kendi işime yarayacak olan STARS için Mobil uygulama yazdım. Tamamlanınca Android Market’e de yollayacağım ve de open-source olacak. Şu an source’unu göstermek istemiyorum, çünkü veri okuma kısmı biraz kötü. Ama şu an için olabildiğince efficient. Bir ara bir HTML parserla düzeltmek gerek.

Benim yazdığım uygulama neden daha iyi?

1. Internete bağlanma sırasında arayüzü kilitlemiyor.
2. Şifrenizi hatırlıyor, her seferinde girmeye gerek kalmıyor.
3. Android’in kendi arayüz araçlarını kullanıyor. (BCC’ninki de öyle fakat bir WebView içinde desktopta nasıl görünüyorsa öyle gösteriyor)
4. Ekrana sığıyor.
5. Login ekranında arayüzü gerekirse kaydırabiliyorsunuz. Böylece klavye açıkken login tuşuna basabiliyorsunuz. (Küçük bir ekranınız varsa anlarsınız)

Şu an yazdığım uygulamayı yayınlıyorum, şimdilik sadece Grade sayfası çalışıyor. Diğerleri yolda. Eğer Java’da bana diğer başlıklar için methodlar yazmak isteyen varsa çekinmesin.

Güvenlik konusunda çekinceniz varsa indirmeyin o zaman. Zorla sanki. İndirmek isteyenlere açık. Ki güvenlik endişeniz varsa da bunu denedikten 5 saniye sonra şifrenizi değiştirebilirsiniz. HTML5 Magic

As you might not know, the HTML 5 specification offers File API for manipulating both binary and text files on client side. Your imagination is the only limitation for the capabilities of this technology. You can have a look at a detailed tutorial at the HTML5Rocks website. Remember, the files are saved to a sandbox area, not in real file system.

HTML5 also offers a new interface called WebSockets API, that allows you to open a socket to the webserver and remain opened until server or you close it and provides you a two-way communication.   This saves a lot of time, when you have to save time. Because XHR requests just closes after the response is received, so a great time is saved when you do not have to re-open a TCP connection. WebSockets offer both binary and text transfer. However, only Google Chrome 15 Beta version implements binary conversion. One ugly fact, a single message  cannot exceed 32KB, or I cannot, Chrome throws an error that frame size is too big.

Platforms

Anyways, with these two technologies, I had a great idea, I could implement a simple file server.  The server is implemented with Java, but actually what it does is listening to a user defined port and respond on each request, defined by specification. I implemented the server using Webbit server.

Of course, writing data to client, opening sockets to each computer in the world is not allowed by any browser. However, Google Chrome has an application model where you can request user permissions to do more. So I could open sockets to each server on the world and use unlimited storage. Implementation was JavaScript on the client side, which had a little performance issues, but a great scripting language.

Server / Client Interaction

1. Client opens a web socket to the server.
2. Server accepts it.
3. Client sends authentication information.
4. If user is accepted file list is sent to user as a string message.
5. User wants information about file X.
6. Server sends how many pieces does file have.
7. Client requests File X, piece 0.
8. Server sends first, 32 KB of data as binary. Until 4 MB is reached, server keeps sending 32 KB chunks of data.
9. Server sends OK after first message with piece number.
10. Client saves file as 4 MB to disk, free the BLOB from memory.
11. Go to step 7, with piece + 1 and repeat until the last piece is achieved.
12. After all pieces received, read all pieces 1 by 1 and append them to the final file.
13. Close the connection.

Results

This works! Really! But not with very large files. Because, some of you may imagine, there are concurrency problems. Also, the binary data  received from server is not marked with piece and chunk number. I thought, I was using local, the packets should come in the order I send them, but this is not the case. If I try to fetch a ~250MB file, It fails. But I could successfully transfer a 30 MB file, inside my computer.  However, it is not suitable for real-life client-server model. It could even fail in a LAN.

My point was to prove that HTML 5 can be used to create a FTP-like client. File API and WebSockets API provides a lot of opportunities. What I have done is not a distributable project, yet. But I have a page on Google Project. I am just learning SVN, so please forgive me for any inconvenience

First time I met Linux was at 2003 (actually earlier, I saw a giant Unix server at my fathers work place when I was a kid, but of course I did not realize what that was) where my lovely sister got to the university and as a policy, they gave her a nice IBM laptop. It was installed Suse Linux and except my father, we were shocked. It was the first time I was touching a Linux installed system. However, we could not set up it to connect our wireless network at home, so I wanted to find how that was acomplished, but not a clue, since my English was not good enough these days, to understand where is the “Network” settings, and even I found it I think I wouldn’t tell the difference between DHCP on /off.

If you are thinking that trauma caused an repulsion on me against Linux systems, you are wrong.

It all started, when I got the university and as I entered the universe of computers, I wanted to taste everything, I wanted to compile my Java projects on Ubuntu. I have been installing Windows from scratch for a very-long time on diferent configurations, so I thought it would not be such a hard task to download an ISO and setup a 700 MB OS. Actually, It was easy until I reached the partition setup. It was Ubuntu 9.10 and I was given an option to install aside my Windows, or do some custom actions. Of course, I chose custom and what was that? I understood it was showing my harddrive in a linear map. However, what was ext4, ext3, swap .. and the other file systems? I was clever enough to understand these were filesystems. When I saw swap, I understood that it should be something similar to the Windows swapping, but in Linux it should be on an another partition, and unlike Windows, they name it with /dev/sda1,2,3.. Fine, I setup my first Ubuntu ever. It was looking nice, even my function keys on laptop were working (the ones that matter of course, like volume up and down). 

Nice interface, it was. (Yes, I like Yoda). However, when I opened the Firefox, it was not playing any Flash content. Okay, that’s closed source, so It was not installed. However, kind Firefox was asking me to chose a Flash alternative. I have chosed it did not work. I assumed it was due to my operating system being 64-bit (so I could use full of my 4gig RAM, like I would fill all of them) But I still remember, I have downloaded some file like, libflashplayer-10.0.45.2.linux-x86_64.so.tar.gz and tried manual install. Of course, I have failed.

And the updates? What the hell are libsjcca (Just writing gibberish names)

On another day, I was trying to install Java. I take a look at Ubuntu Software Center, however, it was not there. Don’t be suprised, I remember reading an article that indicates they did not include it YET, because of some disagreement. I did not know what was open-jdk6, but I installed it. Then I downloaded Netbeans. I thought it would be something exe or something that fires up the required installer (maybe the Ubuntu Software Center?) to install my Netbeans. But, it was a .sh file. After a quick search, I could find that I should install it like sh netbeans67.sh .. Fine, but I did not know sudo command, so I spent another 10 minutes to figure out that.  Anyways, I installed Netbeans but It was asking for where was JDK. How the hell should I know? In some cryptic directories that I can never find out?  Really, reducing the folder names to 3 letters is not such a good idea. You can survive If you say “variableData” instead of “var”. In the end, I could not find my open jdk installation. I googled how to install the original java, from the website maybe. I installed it and it was another sh file. It repacked my file to my /home/mustafa/Downloads/java6jdk. It could nicely ask where to put it right? However, when I opened the terminal to write java –version to verify my installation, nothing appeared. I looked at my laptop and said “Do not mess with me, I JUST INSTALLED IT!”. It seems that I needed something like path variable, but I did not do that, sorry. I searched for an alternative way to install my java and finally I could find this magic: sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk. Nice, it worked. At least my Netbeans could find it.

After a month, I needed to install MySQL. I do not actually want to remember it. But in short; I find it, installed it, I forgot my password, or used a special character in the installation, anyways, I wanted to uninstall it. Nice, for now, I installed applications to my Linux, but where the heck is uninstall? I could not find, as I installed it from command line, it did not appear on Software Center. So, I tried re-installing, It did not help. Then I reinstalled my Ubuntu, to start from scratch. I noted my successful steps, so I had success next time. I even installed Apache Tomcat, and developed my JSP+MySQL project for CS 102, with NetBeans without any problems.

Time passed, a nice summer has come, and I went to a different dormitory. In that building, the RJ-45 sockets were installed by a reckless person. He/she took the swapped 3rd little cable and the 8th one. We had special cables, no problem with Windows. But my Ubuntu was refusing to connect to the network. So I found out that, I was not using my vendor’s driver, I got their website to download it. Great, its another sh file. I used it, but it was giving an error, I searched the net for days, but there was no solution. I did not do anything until new term, and in November, I decided to check their website for a new driver, but there was none. But I submitted a bug report, and I got the right solution in a day. It was nice to see someone was interested to fix my bug. However, I lost many hours searching for another solution on the net.

Time passed again, and I bought a new 22” monitor for my laptop, to enlarge my vision. However, it was a pain to set up it too. I aligned my screens so that the monitor would be on right, and it would be connected to  my laptop. However, my mouse was going rouge. Because I hoped it to treat like Windows; it should create 1366 x 768 + 1680×1050 regions. However, my precious Ubuntu created 1366 x1050 + 1680 x 1050 regions. I was mad. This is the stupidest idea. I had an ivisinle desktop with 200 pixels height, and my mouse was always lost. It may not seem like a such a big lost to you, but it’s annoying. And I aligned my smaler screen to be on the bottom. When I moved my smaller screen to top; It ruined my view; dividing my small screen to 2 regions, that I must move my mouse down to reach the top. These two are not the only problems; I had to reset my configuration at each boot, even I did the configuration with Gnome’s own tool and checked to apply it for all users. I was using a commadn like xrandr –primary … etc some cryptic stuff.

Ubuntu 11.04 has come out! And I installed it. Sorry, but Unity sucks. I do not need that big buttons. I am not blind. Secondly, I was losing control of my open applications. I know that is not an argument against Ubuntu. I changed it to login to old Gnome 2 interface. However, all my precious Compiz Fusion effects were gone. For the record; I did not chose “no effects” option. I installed restricted drivers, no help. I even installed ATI Catalyst drivers, no help. Indeed, It could not create a 3000×1050 region; I was mad. I do not remember, how I set them up, It was giving an error that the region is so big. But when I restarted my PC, everything was fine, in a weird way.

Sorry, but I do not  enjoy using Linux. I did not try other distros, but this one is ought to be the most community supported one and that’s not enough. Let’s be honest, I sometimes have problems with my Windows too. I hate it sometimes, but the solution of it is usually handled from a nice interface, not terminal commands. It’s hard for me to remember xrandr –output VGA –mode 1280×1024 –pos 0×0 –output LVSD –mode 1400×1050 –pos 0×998 if a problem persists. Ability to use terminal to handle problems are very nice, but it’s the problems that drives me crazy. I am not a fanboy or anything, I use variety of products everytime, but Linux is complicated. It is not user friendly. I am capable of exploring my problems and solving them, even they are hard. Really, I am ambitious, I want my problem to be solved, so I can get use of my operating system.  But, my mother is not. Even my sister is not. Even most of colleagues of me aren’t and won’t.

I admire the motivation behind the Linux, but I am stressed when I am using Linux. May be I am not experienced or smart enough to use Linux. Go there Linux fans, It may be fast, rock solid, more secure than Pentagon, reliable and not selling our confidential data to evil advertising companies. However, It would be better If It was easier for me, my mom and the others I care. I cannot imagine me trying to fix my mom’s Ubuntu on telephone.

Please note that; I am not a Microsoft-Fan and a Linux hater. I never do that. As an example, before writing this post I have waited 2 years, to gain enough experience with my Ubuntu to say that I do not like it.

I may use some Linux distro after years, maybe days after that post. But I do not feel comfortable using it. I agree, its secure, reliable, fast. No doubt on that, I assure you. But Linux is good for me, If I can keep continuing faster than I do in Windows, but I can’t.

I hope all the fanboys get the point before shouting at me. Title is “Why I don’t Like Using Linux (for now maybe)”, not “LINUX SUCKS” .

Şeklinde mantık sorularıydı. Stajyer seçmenin en sağlıklı yolu bu muydu bilemem, çünkü daha sonra bir mülakat olmazsa ilginç sonuçlar doğurabilir bu test. Ayrıca staja İstanbul dışında Ankara şubesinde girsek de, görevliye sorduğumuzda, “Buraya da stajyer alınıyor mu?” –“Burada yapacak iş yok ki” diyince biraz garipsedik. Herkes topluca çıkarken de alarm çaldı ve merdivenlerin kapısı kilitliydi. Sanırım çalışanların işten kaçmaması için yeni yöntemler deniyorlar.

CS202 ödevlerinde Moodle’da yaptığımız şikayetten sonra (Data structure’la problem çözmeye odaklanamıyoruz kullanıcı inputu düzeltmek daha çokvaktimizi alıyor diye) tamamen doğru inputlar veriyorlar ve verdikleri problemler de doğru düzgün oldu. 3.ödev güzeldi bence bir işe yarıyodu. 4.ödev de çok mantıklı bir ödev değildi ama pek de amele işi yoktu en azından. 5.ödev güzel ama, Aybar Hoca metnini yazarken pek eğlenmişe benziyor ki bizi de eğlendirdi

Her neyse, dosya okuma ve yazmada problem yaşıyorsanız, bu kodu kullanabilirsiniz. Hiç boşluk okuma vs. gibi string işlemleriyle uğraşmaya da gerek yok. Saçma sapan string işlemleri zaten CS-224 1.ci projede yaptık, daha da yapmayalım

Hepimiz sorguluyoruz, “Zaten Mühendisim ben bırakın proje yapayım şunu yapayım bunu yapayım kod yazayım matematik yapayım, ne gerek var ya essaydir humanitydir yaaa!” diye ama bu derslerin bana biraz faydası olduğunu söyleyebilirim, hayatta okumayacağım şeyleri okuyorum. Not ortalamamı düşürse de ben derste eğleniyorum. Ve bugüne kadar Humanity dersinin herhangi bir ödevi, sınavı, sınıf içi çalışması dahil herşeyindeki en yüksek notumu (B+) Victor Frankestein’a (canavarı yaratan adam, canavarın adı Frankenstein değilmiş! naber!) yarattığı canavarla nasıl başa çıkacağını anlatan bu 2 sayfalık yazımla aldım. Geleceğe dönüş, ah yaz tatili gelsin tekrar izleyeceğim hepsini! Neyse uzatmadan yazımı paylaşıyorum. En kısa sürede ve en eğlenceli yazdığım yazım oldu:

Dear V. Frankestein,

I am Mustafa, from the year 2011. The time machine was invented in 1985, by Doctor Emmet Brown. He let me use his machine, his car -obviously different from your era’s cars- and I set the date to 22 July 1815. Because I do not know the exact time when did you create your creature. However, my existence could create unexpected results and destroy the space-time continuum and cause a hell in the future! So I did not meet you in person and I hope this letter will not change the future. In addition, If this letter can get you in time, my only advice is that do not abandon your creature upon the creation of it or even it reaches before the creation of your creature, do not create him, you will not like the result, really. However, if it does not, read the above very carefully.

There are different times that you can have this letter and I have advices for all of them. In the future as honored council of HUM-112-8, we studied all the possibilities and decided to write the best solutions for your situation. If you have this letter before you meet your creature from the first time since you abandoned it, I advise you not to freak out and act like you lost your tongue. He will try to convince him to create a female companion for himself, only because he read Paradise Lost and thinks that his situation is not different from Adam but you treat him worse than the Satan. In this situation, your creature may try to convince you to believe that his aggressive nature will be reduced when he has a female companion and gone exile on the forests, live a life far from the civilization.

If you are convinced to do create a female companion for him and we know that you are afraid of that you will cause a race of devils and with their children they would cause the extinction of the human race on the earth. We know that you will start creation of a female companion but will never complete because your feel of guilt. However, this will make your creature even more mad and cause much more trouble. If this your only concern of creating a female companion, why do not you take her sexual abilities? Or you can place something in the female’s body that will cause both to die when they attempt sexual intercourse. You reached the secret of life and this would not be hard. Even if you cannot do that, at least take her sexual abilities. He will only have a friend but not a child.

However, if you get this letter too late and you are afraid of what will happen on your wedding night, we have two advices for you. Be a man, don’t be selfish and do not leave your woman alone. You only think yourself, you think that either you or him will be dead and the problem is solved. However, you may not realize that you left her open to danger. Your creature is violent and smart, you should be more careful. It is not too late for you, if you can contact the authorities, police, or the army you can be protected. Tamam, Google’ı o kadar küçümsemeyelim, her şeyi buluyor, ancak arama motoru WolframAlpha ile karşılaştırlılamaz. Google’la da konuşabilirsiniz, ancak fark şudur ki Google’da “who is chuck norris” yazdığınız zaman size Google bir sürü site, WolframAlpha ise size girdinizin yorumlanmasıyla beraber direk istediğiniz bilgiyi verir. Microsoft’u severim, doğduğumdan beri evde en az 1 Microsoft ürünü olması da bunun bir işareti olabilir. Windows 3.1 le başlayan maceram Millienium Edition hariç her sürümünü kullanarak ilerledi ve sonunda Windows 7’ye geldim. Windows 7’den memnunum şimdi hakkını yemeyelim. Ancak Windows Update ile birlikte opsiyonel olarak gelen Windows Live Messenger 2011 ‘i sevmedim, sevemeyeceğim. Bana göre fazla sosyal içerikli, arkadaşlarımı çevrim içi olanlar, benin çevrim dışı gözüktüklerim, çevrimiçi olup da benim çevrim içi gözükmediğim, bütün arkadaşlarım, Facebook arkadaşlarım diye gruplamasına gerek yok.  Ya da News Feed’de Facebook haberlerini gösterip, bazı şeylere tıkladığımda Facebook’u açacaksa hiç kasmasın bence. Ayrıca :’( gibi ifadeleri de iğrenç ifadelerle değiştirmesini hiç tasvip etmedim.

Kısacası, WLM 2011’i kurdum, baktım, ve kaldırdım. Kaldırma işlemi normal bir işlem ancak eskisinin linki artık Microsoft’ta kolayca ulaşabileceğiniz bir yerde değil. O yüzden ben de linkini koyuyorum 2009 versiyonunun. Ayrıca, tüm programların yüklü olduğu, yükleme sırasında internete ihtiyaç duymayan offline installer da var. Bence çok geç olmadan edinin:
